GREYTOWN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING. (Our Travelling Reporter.) A special meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held on Thursday evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr W. A. Hutton), and Crs. Brooks, Kidd, Eaton, Rees, Saywell, Tate and Haigh. After a general discussion it was decided that application be made under sections of the Main Highways Act to the No. 10 District Highways Council for a subsidy on road maintenance for the Tauherenikau road from the borough boundary to Main street, from Main street and thence to North street, and also the Moroa road from the borough boundary to Main street.

A deputation from the sports bodies waited on the council in reference to improvements to the Memorial Park. Mr J. F. Thompson said he regretted to say the grounds on the Park were altogether too small. The Sports Union was instituted primarily to provide adequate playing grounds. The council had decided to vote £75 towards laying out the grounds. Mr W. A. Tate had promised £25, and donations were also promised by residents. The committee, therefore, had £270 in hand, while the Tennis Club had £199. The reserve was now crowded out, and the hockey people were forced to play on improvised grounds at Ahiakouka. The Union had brought down a report. This provided for one football and tw’o hockey grounds; the increase of the children’s playing area; to reserve an area of 30 by 30 between the hockey grounds for a cricket pitch. A grandstand was suggested on the western boundary, but to erect this it would be necessary to remove some of the trees of remembrance. It was pointed out that the best site for the tennis courts was between the croquet lawns and the children’s playing area. It was asked that tenders be called for the work, so that the playing grounds might be ready for next seai son, and that the work be carried out under the supervision of the Sports | Union.

Cr. Tate suggested that provision be made for basketball, which was becoming a popular sport. Mr Thompson stated that if the trees were placed back it would increase the playing area and facilitate a complete scheme.

The Mayor considered the ladies should be consulted before any trees were touched.

The deputation pointed out over 1000yds of metal could be hewn from the grounds, which was w’orth something to the council, and a contribution would be acceptable. The Mayor and Mr Thompson were deputed to wait on the Ladies’ Committee regarding the suggested removal of trees.

Crs. Eaton and Kidd were appointed to represent the council on the Sports’ Union Committee.

Mr Thompson asked if any provision had been made by the council for the supply of latrines.

The Mayor stated that this matter had been deferred purposely until the requirements were ascertained. The deputation thanked the council for its patient hearing and withdrew.

Cr. Tate moved that the recommendations of the Sports’ Union be carried out according to the plan submitted, provided the council’s nominees be given a place on the committee. Cr. Rees seconded, and the motion was carried.

The Works Committee was deputed to bring down a report regarding the surplus metal to be taken off the grounds. A letter was received from the Electric Power Board asking if the Council required any overhanging lights at the Post Office, Wood street ami MoroaTauhcrenikau wads.—lt was decided to write asking for the best quote for these lights.
