EDUCATION BOARD.

CANDIDATES FOR VACANCY. Mr Alex. Donald, who is a candidate for the seat on the Education Board which will be vacated by Mr Grundy, is a native of Dunfermline, and has all the Seotsnian’s traditional love of education. Educated at the Chapel school and at the High School in Dunfermline, he then went to Glasgow, where he learnt his trade, and finally to London. He spent six years in the south of England before leaving for New Zealand 20 years ago. Mr Donald came straight to Masterton and commenced in business here. He has always taken a keen interest in social movements, one of his first acts on coming here being the establishment of the Y.M.C.A. He was a provisional director of the Workers’ Building Society and for two years chairman. Mr Donald first appeared as a member of the Borough Council in 1911. He was in at the foundation of the Masterton West School, which is his especial child, and has been chairman since its inception (1919-20). The additional rooms at the school are almost entirely due to his efforts. He was also the prime mover in the establishment of the dental clinic in Masterton, one of the first in the Dominion. Mr Donald has shown himself to be possessed of great tenacity and a faculty for getting what he aims at. He has on many occasions headed deputations on educational matters to Ministers of Education (Mr Hanan and Mr Parr) and to the Prime Minister.

Mr W r . H. Jackson, late headmaster of the Masterton D.H.S. and ex-Mayor of the town, is also ft candidate.

It is unlikely that Mi* T. Moss, the other member of the Board from the Wairarapa, will have any opposition.
