AMUSEMENTS.

THE CHRISTIAN. A photoplay that is worthy to rank among the best that the industry has to show—that is the opinion of many reviewers who saw the photoplay version of Sir Hall Caine’s most famous novel, ‘ ‘ The Christian. ’ ’ Picturegoers of Masterton have an opportunity of judging of the merits of this Maurice Tourneur production “The Christian” at the Opera House to-night. It is a foregone conclusion that they will agree with the opinions expressed by those who have already seen it. The production is some 10,000 feet in length and the portrayals of the parts of John Storm and Gloria Quayle are particularly fine. There is a matinee on Friday at 2.30. COSY DE LUXE. Herbert Rawlinson has became a member of the cauliflowcr-cared gentry: to wit, he has become a pugilistic gentleman. The romantic hero of many Universal crook dramas makes his initial appearance in the role of a prize-fighter in “The Victor,” which opened last night at the Cosy de Luxe theatre. It is a. part far afield from the type in which he is so well known to the motion picture public, but the popularity of the production proves that the public will accept its heroes under any colours. Not that Rawlinson doesn’t fit into the role of the sport story. He carries off the part with the finesse of a tried veteran of the prize ring and displays remarkable ability with the boxing gloves. In a way the role is rather fortunate for him, for it proves to hi s admirers that he is an athletic chap and a real fighter. For th e public like an actor, but it also likes that actor to be a man. The story is woven around the experiences of a young Englishman who was sent to America by his father, a nobleman, to marry a millionairess and save the mortgaged castle. The thing sounds simple enough, but an amazing lot of entertainment is developed from the theme.
