BEYOND THE PALE.
THE CHURCH DOOR BARRED. FOR GENERAL’S FUNERAL. Paris, March 23.—A company of famous French generals, including Marshal Joffre, Marshal Petain, and Marshal Fayolle, and Generals Desperay, and Debeney, who attended the Chapel of Invalides for the funeral of General Pelle, were shocked to discover the coffin in the courtyard, thrust out of the church as being “beyond the pale.” It is revealed that General Pelle, who was a devout Roman Catholic, married a divorced Protestant in 1920. As the church does not recognise divorce, the marriage was only civilly celebrated. The Archbishop of Paris, Cardinal Dobois, : had consented to the conduct of the ceremony in deference to the wishes of the family, but when the circumstances w’ere explained he directed the coffin to be removed and the church doors locked.
The funeral ceremony was therefore conducted without a priest.—(“Sun”)
