CLAIM AGAINST MAORIS.

FOB PAINTING HOUSE. PLAINTIFF WINS. At recent sittings of the Magistrate’s Court in Masterton a case was heard in which Cole Bros, proceeded against Piki Savage and Te Aururu Manihera (a Maori woman and her nephew), to recover money due for painting, paper-hanging and repair work done to a house at Te Oro Ore. Mr Free, S.M., delivered his reserved judgment on Saturday and said that it was admitted that Mrs Savage ordered the work to be done, and there was 110 evidence that she had authority to pledge the credit of Manihera for the purpose. Mrs Savage’s objection to pay the balance due to Cole Bros, because the roof leaked had no real foundation, because the roof work was not done by plaintiffs, and they were not responsible for any defect in the workmanship. Judgment was therefore given for the defendant Manihera, and against the separate estate of Piki Savage for £l6 0s lOd. Mr B. McKenzie appeared for plaintiffs, and Mr W. Noble for de. fondants.
