1 PONEKE AND ATHLETIC DRAW. I

Wellington, Sept. 20.—1 n the chai- ! lenge match for the National Mutual Cup Poneko (holders) and Athletic drew 17 all. —(P.A.) HIGH SCHOOL 3rd (6), MASTERTON 4-th (6). The above teams provided one of the best curtain-raiser games played on Memorial Park. High School possessed the advantage in weight, and had slightly the better of play, but the i form and combination of the lighter j lower-grade team enabled tnem to withstand the repeated attacks of the school. I For Masterton tries were scored by B. Pook and V. Norman, the latter intercepting a pass in Masterton 25, and running the full length of the field, scoring a brilliant try. For School Connor and K. Eastwood were successful, the latter after a splendid run from over half-way. The backs of both sides threw the ball about in a very creditable manner, and the tackling, considering the hard condition of the ground, was also above that usually witnessed. The best for School were R. Smith, K. Eastwood and Chesterman in the backs and Burling, McAlister, Candy, and Sutherland among the forwards. For Masterton J. Loveday, V. Norman, F. Mooney and H. Mackley played well amongst the backs and M. Groube, B. and N. Sutherland, T. Carr, and J. .Scott in the forwards. Mr J. O. Pinhey refereed.
