RUAPEHU ABLAZE.
EXITING SCENES IN DRY DOCK. London, May exciting fire occurred aboard the New Zealand shipping Company’s steamer Ruapehu, lying in dry dock at Blackwall. Two thousand tons of ammonia in the hold became involved. Firemen with gas masks succeeding id recovering two of the crew who were lying unconscious in the fumes. Meanwhile 15 motor engines and a hundred firemen were on the scene of the fire, which burnt furiously for four hours. The brigades prevented the vessel from becoming entirely involved by flooding her completely.— (A. and N.Z.)
Three missionaries of Bath Cify Mission have asked that their salaries be reduced from £230 to £lOO a year. ’Their request was refused. “It would be a disgrace to Christianity to grant their application,” said a speaker at the annual meeting of the mission.
