A TRUCK OF WOOD ABLAZE.

The fruits of several days’ hard labour almost ended in smoke last night. Mr J. McLauchlan, of Cornwall street, arrived from the country aKout 8 o’clock with two wagon loads of firewood, each containing 16 cords, and on going out to the 'yard at 9 he discovered one load blazing furiously. The fire brigade was summoned, and after an hour’s work with 500 feet of hose on a low-pressure, the burning wood was extinguished, but not before four cords had been consumed. The wagon, which was uninsured, was badly scorched on one side. It is thought that sparks from the engine ignited the wood, which was mostly dry rnatai roots.
