THE IRISH ARMY.
CONSCRIPTION PROBABLE. A CONFERENCE' ABANDONED. (Press Association—Copyright.) (Received 7.35 p.m.) London, Oct. 9. —General Mulcahy, addressing the troops at Gormanstown Camp, foreshadowed the army as being a big national organisation through which the youth of Ireland would become better citizens. The speech is regarded as foreshadowing the Giwerninent’s intention to introduce compulsory military service. Owing to the Sinn Eein members’ hostility to the proposed conference between Ulster Nationalists and Sinn Feincrs, aiming at a unified attitude towards the Northern Parliament, it has now broken down.—(A. and N.Z.) A BIG BATTLE. THE REBELS SURROUNDED. (Received 11.30 p.m.) London, Oct. 10.—It is reported from Cork that a big fight took place at Upton, the Nationalists surrounding (he Irregulars, killing three and capturing 60 and a largo quantity of arms and ammunition.—(‘ 4 Times. ’’)
