SINGING IN SCHOOLS.

Mr. J. Caughley, Director of Education, told the education meeting on Monday that singing was to be a feature of the curriculum in the junior high schools. He has a high appreciation of the value of musie and does rot intend to allow it to die out, a.s it has done in the higher schools. Well, there is singing and singing. The very best chorus singing is that of young people under proper training, and perhaps the very worst is that of growing boys and girls who are not under proper training. Harrow School is famous for its songs and its singing. Two of the most famous school songs —“Willow the King” and “Forty Years On”—conic from there. At the competition in Masterton last year the musical judge (Mr L. Watkins) strongly recommended the cultivation of singing by children’s choirs. Since then the community idea has come and thrived, making part singing once mere popular. It will certainly brighten the curriculum a little provided tho American system of shouting is not cultivated.
