THE REPARATIONS.
GUARANTEES DEMANDED. IN BETURN BOE MOBATOEIUM. (Press Association—Copyright.) Paris, Jan. 18.—The “Petit Journal” states that the guarantees which are being demanded by the Reparations Commission from Germany in return for the concession of the roora torium affecting the payment of reparation instalments, are as follows:— (1) Germany, within six weeks, is to submit a programme assuring the freedom of the Reichsbank from Government control.
(2) A technical adviser agreed on by the Commission and the Reiclis bank is to control the financial policy of the bank and to be empowered to refuse advances, direct or indirect, to the German Government. (3) A scheme of currency reform is to be submitted, promising a stoppage of the issue of notes without cover. (4) Steps arc to be taken to ensure the return of exported German capital to Germany, and that the power of sending capital out of the country in future will not be abused. GERMANY PAYS AN INSTALMENT. (Received 8.15 p.m.) Paris, Jan. 19.—The Reparations Commission officially announces that Germany has paid a sum equivalent to 31,000,000 gold marks, being the first of a series of payments at ten days* intervals.—(A. and N.Z.)
