THE LIQUOR POLL
AND A SCOTCH POET. A Scotch poet has written as follows (o a Dunedin paper: — The fecht is owro, an' we hae won, And mony a hard day's work is done; The traitor loons are weel put doon, And 'twill be lang till they come roon. Fanatics, too,,are oot o' braith; Ma fogs! they nearly got their'daith! They tried to stap oor wco bit tot; The kintra thundered oot "What rot! " For what could Britons be but free? They ne'er were teacht tae bend the knee, And as the sires the sons will do, Nor, tak' ma word, will ttey o'er ruo. For ages noo, the worl' a' o'er, Men aye could tak' their drink galoro; 'Twas Nature's wye tae dae them guid, An' warm and purify their blude. A guid New Year tae ane an' a; An'tae ycr share may a' guid fa'; May beer an' Scotch be in their ben— A gift frae Providence, ye ken.
