The Rome correspondent of the Chicago "Daily News" has interviewed Cardinal Gasparri, who said that the Vatioan favours the. abolition of conscription after the war. 'This is the only method of limiting armaments, while voluntary service is fully effective in peace times. Evidence of thin is found in the fact that England, Canada, and Australia had relied wholly on volunteers in peace time, but that the war had compelled England and America to adopt conscription, as volunteers were insufficient for the new military needs.
