(By Telegraph—'Press Association.) : AUCKLAND, Last Night. The Hon. G. W. Russell has telegraphed as ('follows to* the Patriotic Association in reference to the request of the Returned Soldiers' Association for* authority to appeal to the public for £50,000 for the erection of expensive clubs requiring a considerable annual sum for maintenance: "It is very questionable as regards the tief irability of creating a distinction between the returned soldiers and the rest of the people. It should be discouraged. Men should be encouraged to return to civilian occupations and associations. The patriotism of the people should be directed to supporting the existing funds for the benefit oF soldiers and dependants, as many .more o,l]ls will come." He regretted he could not approve of the fund without the consent of Cabinet.
