Y.M.C.A.

AND SALVATION ARMY. Representatives of the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army waited upon tho Wairarapa Patriotic Association at its meeting yesterday, requesting the assistance of the Association in securing funds to carry on war work. . At a Inter stage of' tho meeting, tho Chairman stated that boiled dmvn the request was that for the year each body should secure £SOOO from this district. He did not think the Association could make a Bpeciul canvass, but it would br> quite prepared to tender its patronage and advice. Sir Walter Buchanan did not think the time was ripe to make a special appeal. Mr Logan pointed out that there was an effort in progress now to raise" funds for the Y.M.C.A. Trench Comforts' Funds. There was only £B6OO to the credit of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund; and this amount should be preserved. The Chairman said it was a mistaken idea to tie hp the funds until the men returned. .What about the men who would never return? Should , not they get some benefit while in the j trenches ? i Mr Matheson said he hoped tliat the gi?ant would be a substantial one, and that each organisation would receive an equal amount. He was in accord with the' sentiments expressed by the Chairman. fSir Walter Buchanan said that the nfeed of helping the men in the firing line and in hospital was patent-"to all. If a great body of men came back and required assistance the country would surely rise to the occasion. Mr Whatman urged that a. substantial amount be granted each body. Mr McGregor considered a further appeal should be made to the ■ people. If the Association voted £3OOO, surely the public could be relied upon to subscribe the additional £2OOO. Mr Coradine pointed out that the Magterton Patriotic Shop would Boon ba in progress again, and judging by last year's work there should be no difficulty, with a grant from the Association, in raising the money asked for. k Mr Card contended that the Association was not justified in making euch a large grant. They just had jfco look into the hospitals and asylums to see what their obligations were to i the returned men, Mr Hornsby said he joined with those who urged that present help should be given. Both Associations were doing a grand work at the front. Mr Matheson moved that a vote "f £3OOO each be made to the, Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army for the coming year and that the Association expresses the hope that the canvass on behalf of both l organisations will result in an equal \ snrnount being subscribed by the public. Mr Bomsby seconded. Mr Card moved an amendment that jfche amount be £ISOO each. Mr Ryder seconded. The amendment was put to the meeting and lost, and the motion declared carried.
