Messrs A. E. Broc-kett and H. J. Nightingale, who are wolf known in the Wairarapa, have had tho degrees of Master of Arts conferred upon them by the Senate of the New Zealand University. Advice has been received that Pte. "Len" Broome, son of Mr H. Broome, of Wanganui, and formerly of Masterton, has been killed in action at tlie Dardanelles. The late Pte. Broome was a nephew of Mrs E. A. Collier, of Masterton. Mr D. Hughes has resigned his position on the Pahiatua Licencing Committee. At the annual meeting of the committee yesterday, general regret was expressed at Mr Hughes' retirement, and appreciation of his services was placed! on record. Tho Mayor of Masterton (Mr J. M. Coradine) and Mr Hugh Morrison were among the speakers at a public meeting at Pahiatua on Monday evening to-discuss the question of a national fund for wounded soldiers and the dependents of those who die on tlie battlefield. The death occurred in Masterton yesterday morning of Mollie, the six-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs D. O'Loughlin. The child was healthy and strong at school last week, ;7Ut it contracted a cold, upon which quinsey supervened, which culminated fatally. Heapy, of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The wedding ceremony, which was performed by the Rev. T. Halliday, was a quiet one, on account of the recent death of the bride's father. Mr and Mrs Heapy will reside in Martin borough. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital late yesterday afternxm of Mr John Cummins, after a short illness. The deceased was one of the early settlei-s of Masterton, and had been resident here for about thirty years. He leaves a wife and. grown[up family of five sons and three daughters, namely: Messrs John, Lawrence, Patrick, Owen, and Luke, and Misses Mary Eileen, and Cecilia. The family will have the sympathy pi a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.

At the opening of the approaching session of Parliament it will be necessary for the Legislative Council, as well as the House of Jtepresentatives, to elect a Speaker. The second term of Sir Charles Bowen, who has been Speaker of the Council for the past 10 years., is expiring. In this connection it is interesting to note that, of the seven remaining life members of the Council, no fewer than five are octogenarians. Sir Charles Bowen, the Hon. Captain Bailey, and Sir Henry Miller are each about 85 years of age, Sir George McLean fs'B3, and the Hon. J. D. Ormond is over 80. The two other life members are the Hon. Messrs E. J. -C. Stevens and C. J. Johnston.
