SPORTING NOTES.

FIXTURES. September 9. —Danncvirkc RC Steeplechase. [By "Ginger."] The Marton spring meeting opens on Wednesday. The hostilities in Europe have overshadowed all forms ol' sport, more or less. Nevertheless, racing has a special chum unpon the public at this juncture, for are ne not endeavouring to improve, the hro'ed of horses and produce annuals which will he of service to us in the fieldr 1 And, what can do this more effectually than the breeding of tborough oreds? Hence., the Mai ton meeting is interesting from a national as well as a sporting: standpoint. Very well, let us see what -Maitoll is likely to produce. The. first event on the card is the Hark Hurdles. There' are no fewer than seventeen acceptors for this event. Leapuki, St. Gate, and Parai\vani(i will probahly eany most money, and this trio will have to ho reckoned with. M unit an is a good weight-carrier, and the distance and weight should suit him. He will not he far off when the numbers go up. Eangiwhetu and Kakawai are the pick of the middle" division. The -Maiden Hack has produced a field of nineteen, and the winner is 'hard to pick. 1 shall expect to see Elevate, Tea mi i, Aosalys, or Mary Kilcheran. very handy at the finish. The Kaihvay Handicap (six furlongs) is very open. Jf the going is soft, Alt. Victoria will take a power of beating. Day Fly, Guiding Way, and Sunbii'd will also be in the lighting line. The Hunt Cup Steeples, of three miles, has brought out a very large field. I cannot see anything to stretch the neck of Bonny, unless it he Uiro Atu or Hiamoe. The Marton Handicap, of one and a-quarter miles, has been selected as the best of good things for Portraiture. On paper, this certainly reads well. But then, Sir Knox will, havo to be reckoned with,, as will also Commotion, and Hyettus, and The .Summit. The latter may win. The Electric- Hack Handicap, of sis furlongs, is another puzzler. Tyson is a. good one, but has a fair load to carry in 9.f>. Ngarua, Want, and His Eminence will bo well backed. 'Want will not be far away at the finish. The Hack Steeples has provided another big ft,eld. Silver Monarch and Te AVlietu will probably go out favourites. There ar.o several others, however, which may havo to be reckoned with. Darby Paul is about duo to win a race, and dint Lawless has the staying power, whilo Waiwetu may bo expected to run well. People' looking for a dividend may find one in Darby Paul. The Hack Welter is the last event on the card. Fashion Plate, if reserved for this event, may g () out favourite, and, on Christchureh form, will take a lot of beating. Ep worth, .Montana, and Sir Donald are the next best. Failing Fashion Plate. ' Epworth may do the trick.
