RED STARS DEFEAT CARTERTON AND WIN SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. For the first time for some six years tlie Wairarapa senior football championship has been wrested from Carterton. This was accomplished by Red Stars 0 n Saturday, when they met and defeated the champions at Masterton by the narrow margin if two points, after the most exciting and hard-fought game of the season. Both clubs were unfortunate in not having their strongest teams in the field, but the junior players who were included Tn both teams, namely Formal!, Adams, and Southgate in the Star team, and Bowles, Fairbrother, and Nieholls in tlie Carterton team, gave an admirable display. They rose to the occasion, and played easily up to the standard set by Wairarapa senior players throughout this season. The game was hardfouglit right to the call of time, but duo mainly to the excellent defe >ive tactics of the Star hacks, they had islightly the better of matters. The first spell was easily Stars. Right from the kick off they took up the aggressive and on very few occasions were they called on to defend their line. Don Ross, who played a sterling game throughout the match, looked like scoring before the game had been in progress five minutes. He secured at ahout half-way and made, a great run to w'thiti a few yards of ' the Carterton line, but he was not backed up, and a good chance .of scoring was lost. This was only one of the" many chances that the Stars missed. Time after time they had Carterton hemmed down on their line, but thev either had hard luck, or lacked the very necessary knowledge of knowing how to put the finishing touch when the .opportunity came Being continually in the Carterton twenty-five, and not behig able to cross the line, Stars tried to score points by goal kicking, and Blackmore had a number of attempts, but the ball always fell short. Yates made a splendid effort to drop-kick a goal from the field, but the ball missed the post by a matter of inches. When Hearing the end of the first spell Wynyard, playing at five-eighth, made a splendid opening and parsed 'to Forman. who dived over at the corner. The crowd thought he had scored, and cheered frantically, but the referee decided "out in touch." The first spel! ended with Stars attacking and no score recorded by either side. At the commencement of the second venture. Carterton attacked vigorously, and it looked as if they were going to turn the tables. Stars defended well, however, and the forwards, by clever loose work, carried play once again into the Carterton tweny-five, and frotu v "a scramble right on the Carterton line, Adams secured, and being tuurble to dive himself, pushed the ball into the hands of Ross, who fell over in a good position. Blackmore. had no difficulty in converting, Stars o Carterton nil. Carterton was not disheartened, and playing a great game, drove Stars back on to their own line, and kept them defending from then on. They were making desperate effort-; to retain the championship, and literally played 4 Stars to a stand-still. They were at last rewarded, Meyriek getting over on the corner. Would, they convert? It only took seconds to decide, and when the ball flew high and wide the Red Star supporters literally went mad with enthusiasm, and Stars walked off the field, victors by five, points to three. The Star team played well to a man, but' of the forwards, Welch and Ross were easily the best. It is difficult to single out any of the backs, as they all played great games. The redoubtable' trio, .Blackmore, Wickens, and Wynyard were at their best. In the Carterton team Meyriek, Desmond, and the Blake Brothers played good forward games, and Bowles and Fairbrother were prominent in the backs. Mr Booth was referee.
