The. "Wairarapa Automobile Association held a hill-climb at Hillside, Martinborough, yesterday. The schools in Masterton observed ft half-holiday yesterday on account of the amateur athletic sports.

Evidence for plaintiff was taken at Pahiatua on Wednesday in a case in which J. H. Hooper, land agent, of Wellington, is claiming £2OO from D. M. Owens, settler, of Wellington, in connection with a property transaction. Plaintiff alleges that according to a written agreement with defendant he was to receive £l5O commission if ho effected the exchange of defendant's town property in Wellington for the farm property of H. Cole, late of Nikau. He was also to receive another £SO if lie effected a sale of defendant's property. Plaintiff alleges that he effected tho exchange, but had not received the £l5O commission agreed upon. Furthermore, the contract to sell had been broken, and he claimed £SO as damages. Evidence, which will be sent to Wellington, was given by H. Cole and D. H. Cole. Mr H. McSherry appeared as agent for plain-: tiff's solicitors.

The Masterton Lawn Tennis Club has challenged the Pahiatua Club, who aro the holders of the Wellington Provincial Country Championship, to a match to bo played to-mor-row at Pahiatua.

Two persons who drew sections at the Poro Poro ballot in Masterton yesterday were neither present nor represented. The Commissioner, therefore decided, in accordance with the usual practice, to take ft fresh ballot.

Tho Pongaroa Chamber of Commerce has decided to ask the Premier to obtain a report from' the Lands Purchase Commissioners as to the mutability for closer settlement of tho largo estates between Alfredton and Pongaroa. The afternoon tea arrangements at yesterday's sports were in the hands of a very capable ladies' committee, headed by the Mayoress (Mrs J. M. Cora dine). Great praise is due to those ladies who so generously came forward to assist the Amateur Athletic Club.

The Opaki No. 1 team won the Teams' M.atcli' at the Trentham Meeting yesterday, with a score of 467. Christchureh was second with 458, and Ohurn third with 449. The Opaki team was composed of Riflemen Mcintosh, Bolton, Feast., G. Hyde and'Cameron. The American athletes, who performed so brilliantly at yesterday's sports meeting on the Park Oval, left by the evening train yesterday en route to Hamilton where they make their iinal Appearance in New Zealand. The party, after visiting llotorua, will leave for San Francisco on Saturday week.

At a meeting of the Pongaroa Chamber of Commerce a motion was proposed to, the effect that a public meeting of ratepayers be ■ called in tho Akitio County to- consider tho advisability of dissolving the Akitio County and the amalgamation of the various ridingsi with contiguous counties', according to the community of interests. Tho consideration'of the motion was held over.

Representations are being made to have the Eketahuna Post Office put up a grade, to which it is claimed it is fulTy entitled, and to retain the services of Mr. Tregonning, who is under notico of promotion to tke Bluff. It is asserted that this office has now tho fargest mail and transit business of any office in the eame graae.—"Express." < Major Peixotto, manager of the American team of athletes, gave it as his opinion yesterday thatl the Masterton Park Oval was undoubtedly the finest sports ground in the Dominion. Other grounds had fine running tracks, but few grounds had such fine surroundings as the Park Oval. For attempting to lower standard records the Masterton ground was ideal, he said, as runners were neither assisted nor retarded by the winds, which were so often contended with in other parts of the Dominion.
