WORK OF EXPEDITION.
A FURTHER STATEMENT. (Received Last Niglit, 11.50 o'clock.). ADELAIDE, February 27. Dr Mawson to-day gave the following statement, a* portion of what'was ' cabled to' London, describing it as » terse account of the work of the expedition:—First: The successful negotiation by the ship of the Antarctic pack of ice in a fresh. sphere •of action, where the conditions were practically unknown, resulting in the discovery of new lands and islands. Second: The establishment on lands never before sighted of two Antarctic wintering stations, separated by an air-line of 1000 miles. Scientific programmes have been, constructed in one case for a year and*in another for over two years. Jfliird: The journeys made - over . seaV . ice, . and plateau in regions never before sledged over; at tEe'main base they aggregated 1400 miles; and at the western base 800 miles, not including the depot. The journey of supporting parties, or relay work. . Land has been followed through 33 deg., long. 27, which were sledged"over. Fourth: The establishment by the- party at Macquarie Island of a wireless con-necting-TM? with the Antarctic main base, arid communicating weather conditions to the Meteorological Office for immediate use in forecasts, fifth Oceanograpliic investigation, chiefly in the nature of' /soundings and trawlings* between tlie Australian and the Antarctic continental shelf, trawling being successfully; conducted to a depth of two miles and by sounding tjhe continental shelf lias been indicated tlfrougli 55 deg. longitude. Dr Mawson promises a- further statement late" to-night..
