COST OF LIVING.
There are not a few people in New Zealand who are of opinion that there are reasons other than political for the high cost of living. These will read with interest the comments made by Sir Edward Walker at the annual meeting of the Canadian Hank of Commerce. Sir Edward said that for some years the had been more extravagant than m any period known to history since Uoman timos, and this extravagance had been accompanied by a rise of prices which had made it very hard for those who are not extravagant, and who are most regular in saving money in ordinary traes to put by the usual margin against bfes contingencies. Speaking of Canada far Edmund Walker justified the large productive investments that have been made, hut deprecated ' the extravaganve of individuals, represented by motor cars, ? palatial houses, and social display."
