POKER ON TRAINS.
It is just 1 as well that train travellers should know that it is a breach of the railway'regulations to play cards for money on a railway train. Two ybung men were lined at Auckland on Tuesday for clfending in this direction. The regulations have been in force for many years, and Lave been respected more in the breach than the observance. Train journeys are, at the best of times, very monotonous, and a game of .cards between friends is not a serious matter, even if a few shillings do pass from one to tlie other. The Magistrate pointed out, at Auckland, however, that the. regulations were framed with the object, of protecting young men from- ithtv country against "smart" gentlemen. This is an exploded idea. The young man from the country is nsiiallv well able to look after himself. and if he deliberately mixes with strangers he knows the risks he is taking.
