HORTICULTURE.
In rcent years there has been a distinct improvement in the surroundings of Masterton and in the appearance of its gardens. Dozens of people now find a pleasure, and, indeed, a recreation in horticultural pursuits. The aggregate result is a more attractive town and a more healthy people. The shows that are periodically held by the Masterton Horticultural Society have contributed in no small degree to this happy condition of affairs. They have engendered a feeling of emulation among residents, which has produced industry arid devotion in the garden. There is.no hobby which can be practised with greater advantage to the individual and the community than that of., horticulture. It appeals to the better side of humanity, has a refining influence upon those who engage in it, for it produces a love for Nature and a reverence for the Great Architect of the Universe, The horticultural show should appeal to every" good citizen, and receive his„fiupport. .
