TREATY OF WAITANGI.
I Tho signing of the Treaty cf WaiI tangi on February Gtli, 1840, was tin : event that has had an immcn.se influence upon tho colonisation of Now Zealand. This treaty, which has boon ' called tlio Magna Charta. of the Maori, ' is a singular instance of humanity and I generosity to a comparatively savage ) race, not to be found elsewhere in Tiistory, and nothing redounds more to the credit and the justice if tho British nation. The treaty provided that Her Majesty tlio Queen r? r.r.gland guaranteed to the ' clrVfs a a<l tribes of New Zealand and < ■"> the respective families and i-r ''"viduals ; thereof the full exclusive and undisturbed possession of the lands, estates, forests, fisheries and. other properties so long as it was their desire i to do so, reserving to the Crown the I exclusive'right of buying such liods a.s the proprietors may be disposed to sell at prices to be agreed upon.
