TAHITI ISLAND.
The Leader of the Opposition drew the attention of the Government yesterday to the cablegram announcing that it was proposed by France to cede the Island of Tahiti to Germany in exchange 'for concessions f i Morocco. The Acting-Prime Minister apparently agrees with Mr Massey thatj;th£. is.-of.. very great importance' to" the Australasian Dominions, and Ibe ha®,promised to ascertain the feeling of other States in the matter. The Tahiti group would •afford a somewhat too .convenient base for Germany in. the Pacific. The occupation of the group hy a Power which, if not hostile, is anything but friendly-disposed towards Britain, would at once constitute a menace to Australasia. ; It is to be hoped that such representations will be made as wild cause .France to withdraw the proposal.
