DEFENCE OF THE PACIFIC COAST.

; NEW YORK, March 8. Tho United States Navy League is holding a convention at Los Angeles, California. The conference discussed the question of the strength of the Pacific fleet. Rear-Admiral H. I. Cone, who was Fleet Engineer of the United States Atlantic fiuet on its trip round the world in 1908-09, pointed out that the American Navy would in the future burn oil .instead of coal, and would, consequently, be independent of coaling .bases. This would mean increased effectiveness.
