DURBAN, December 4. A son of the celebrated chief John Dunn states that the rebels at Nkandhla are few, while there is no restlessness among those on the Black &mvolosi River. The chief Dinizulu is at Usuma. A Natal mounted force, with four guns, is at Ginginhlovo, whence Colonel Duncan M'Kenzie advances to-day. . . Martial law has been proclaimed in Zululand. WHAT THE ZULUS INTENDED TO DO. CONSPIRATORS SURPRISED. PROTEST BY DINIZULU. Received December 5, 10.45 p.m. DURBAN, December 5. It is stated that the Government have evidence that the recent series of murders of-loyal natives sho»' that it was intended to force all natives into one camp, then signal a general rising. The Government's action took the conspirators by surprise, and saved the lives of other lovalists, including the chief Sibindi, whom the Government are specially protecting owing to his fidelity at a critical period in 1906.

The "Natal Advertiser's" correspondent at Eshowe states that Dinizulu repeatedly offered to go to Maritzburg whenever he was required. He is ill and suffering from swollen Iters. Sir Charles Saunders, Commissioner of Zululand, conferred with Colonel Mackenzie, and has accompanied a portion of the troops to the front. Dinizulu has telegraphed to the Government expressing surprise at the preparations, andasking why, if it was thought he was in the wrong, he was not tried and punished if guilty. The telegram is attributed to the presence of 200 police watching Usutu until the main force arrives. The Government acknowledges the message, but has not modified its plans. Colonel Mackenzie has absolute power and discretion with a view to ending the intolerable situation.
