BOROUGH WORKS COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Borough Works Committee was held, last evening, and was attended by Crs J. H. Pauling (chairman;, J. Prentice, W. Pragnell, VV. Morris and A. Haughey. The acting-town clerk was directed to enquire into and report on the conditions under which the borough land at the abattoir is being rented by various butchers. In 1906 the council passed a resolution that in future all water supplied to persons outside the borough boundary should be supplied and charged according to meter, and that notice to this effect should then be fciven to all persons that were being supplied. As far as the committee could ascertain, no such notices have been given, but in some cases, meters were fixed. There are still cases where meters do not exist. In order to put the council's resolution into effect agreemen+s have been prepared for execution by all persons outside the borough requiring water, and the committee gave instructions for the fixing of meters to houses where they do not already exist. It was also decided i to have the meters read every three [ months. » It was resolved to call tenders for an earth formation footpath on the north si'Je of Cornwall Street and the forming and metalling of Pownall Street, the expenditure on the former work being provided for in the current year's estimates and on the latter in the loan schedule. The cha'rman stated that Mr Cave had offered to pay half the cost of forming a footpath with concrete kerbhig in Short Street South for about 2\ chains fronting his property. It was decided to recommend the work being carried out on this condition. The acting-engineer reported, inter alia, that the work of tar-paving* Lincoln Road footpaths would be proceeded with shortly. The kerbing and channelling on the east side of Queen Street South was proceeding satisfactorily, and the tar-paving of the footpath would follow. Accounts amounting to £4OO were passed for payment.
