DROUGHT IN HAWKE'S BAY. BY TELEIiHAI'II - MESS ASSOCIATION. NAPIER, December 2. November' was one of the driest months on record, the total rainfall being only half an inch. There is still no sign of the drought breaking, and farmers are becoming anxious. BOOKMAKERS RELEASED. WELLINGTON, December 2. Nine of the bookmakers, who were sentenced to imprisonment recently at Christchurch, and who were first offenders, have had the remainder of their sentences remitted by the Governor. Hon. J. McGowan, Minister of Justice, has recommended His Excellency to remit half the sentences of the others who were sentenced at the same time.

DROWNING ACCIDENT. . DARGAVILLE, December 2. Edward Mulhern, about nine years; of age, was bathing in the Kaihu creek on Sunday afternoon. He was unable to swim, got out of his depth and was drowned in the presence of his mother, who made a determined but ineffectual attempt to rescue him. YOUTHFUL BURGLARS. EIGHT CHARGES OF BREAKING AND ENTERING. GISBORNE, December 2. At the Juvenile Court, this morning, two boys, aged 12 and 10 years respectively, were brought before the magistrate on eight charges of breaking and entering shops in the town. In one case the boys admitted taking £lO, most of which they had thrown into the river. The boys had hidden 52 keys, taken from various premises. Detective Maddern stated that the boys had been reading "Deadwood Dick" trash, to which he attributed the crime. The boys had respectable parents and {rood homes, but had got beyond control. Their parents pleaded that the boys should be given another chance. . The magistrate remanded them till he had ascertained the amount appropriated. BODY FOUND IN THE SURF. GISBORNE, De-ember 2. The body of a ipiddle-aged man, well dressed, was found floating in the surf on the Waikanae heach this morning. It appeared not to have been in the water vc-ry long. The arms were folded across the breast. There was a wound on the back of the head, from which blood was flowing. In the hip pocket was a panaira hat, and in the vest a key with sixpence attached to a piece of blue paper with "John Owens, Enfield Road, Napier" written, thereon. The body has "not been identified locally. It is supposed to be a man who must have fallen from the steamer Waiknre, yesterday, and who has not been missed. NAPIER, December 2. In reference to a telegram from Gisborne stating that the body of a middle-aged man had b-en found in the surf there, and + .hat in the pockets was found an address, "John Owens, Enfield road, Napier," enquiries have elicited the fact that Mr John Owens is at present in Napier. It is supposed from the description given that the body is that of a man named David James Young Kirk, in the employ of Nelson Bros., Ltd., Tomoana, as slaughter-house clerk, and who left on transfer to their Gisborne branch on November 25th. but who has not put in an appearance at the works.

JUVENILE DRUNKENNESS. INCREASE IN DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, December-2. The City Licensing Bench at its quarterly meeting commented on the increase of juvenile drunkenness, especially on Saturday nights. A caution was given that if anycascs of supplying drink to juveniles are sheeted home to any hotelkeeper, he will be severely dealt with.
