HENDERSON CUP COMPETITION. CARLTON v. STAR. Carlton gave Star an afternoon's leathe~ hunting on,the Park Oval yesterday afternoon, running up the respectable total of 210. Waters, who was electee! captain, and P. Welch' wore the first batsmen to represent Carlton, Madsen and Edwards opening the bowling. The batsmen soon settled down to work, and put up 54 before McLean bowled Waters,, after 45 minutes' play. The outgoing batsman had compiled 29 by very neat cricket. Isaacs joined Welch, and 68was up before the former retired with eleven to his credit, made in five hits. A serviceable partnership was that between L. Boyd and Welch. The latter was shaping better now than he did at first, and by good cricket the pair hoisted 104 on the board before Welch ran himself out. The next few wickets fell rapidly. When Wickens joined W. Boyd at 116 the "rot" was stopped. Both batsmen treated repeated changes of howling with scant cuurtesy, and 58 was-added to the total before Edwards found Wickens' weak spot. Munro joined Boyd for the last wicket, and the pair banged the bpwling about till 210 was reached, when Edwards brought about the downfall of Munro and closed the innings. Notwithstanding the big total put up by Carlton the Star bowling was good, and had the fielding at times not been so loose the score would probably nave been less. Edwards bowled well all through, and sent down some splendid Off breaks. He bowled in all 22 overs. Welch was in an hour and a half for his runs, and had a "life" at 21. W. Boyd played well for 37 runs, and Wickens scored his runs by hard hitting. L. Boyd shaped nicely for bis 17, while Munro made some pretty strokes in compiling his score. Star went in to bat a\ 5.35 o'clock but could not make much headway against the bowling of Congdon and Isaacs, and when stumps were drawn they had lost six wickets for 22.
