CASTLEPOINT COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Council was held on Saturday last. Present—The Chairman and Ova Langdon, Richardson, Innes, Byder and Bennett. Correspondence was received from the Collingwood County Council, asking co-operation m urging tho Government to devise some means whereby sums voted for public works may be made available for expenditure during the summer months of the year in whioh they ar« voted. The Chairman was authorised to sign the form of resolution for an overdraft with the Bank of New Zealand. Mr Barton wrote stating that the plans of the road from Whakataki to Castlepoint had been sent to Mataibona, and that he was making the necessary alterations required by the Survey Office. The Very Bev. Dean McKenna applied to have an approach made from the road to the gate at the Catholic Church in Tinui. . The Agricultural Department advised that Tauhinu had teen proclaimed a noxious weed. The Masterton County Clerk furnished returns of the amounts expended on the eleotion of Licensing Committees, and claiming £ls 5s 7d as the proportion payable by the Castlepoint County, and alio sending a statement of the expenditure on the main road from the Wangaehu road to the boundary at Blairlugie, amounting to £1,065 12s 2d, of whioh the Castlepoint Council has to contribute £66 12s. The Lower Hutt Borough Council wrote on the question of the railway route on the eastern side of the Hutt Valley, to a point near the head of the Waiiarapa Lake, and soliciting co-operaton in the matter, and inviting the Chairman to be presentVith tho deputation when the Minister is approached on the subject. Tne DiHtriot Boar! Engineer advised that the plans of the road from Waokataki to Castlepoint had been returned for minor technical information to be [supplied by the En gineer. When this is done they will bejjapproved by tho Survey Office. Tho Seoretary of the Counties Association furnished a circular stating that a conference may be held soon after the House of Bepresentatives meets, and requesting to be supplied with the name of the Council's delegate. „ It waa resolved—(l) That this Council do not co-operate with the Collingwood County, as in recent years sums voted for public works in this County have been available when applied for; (2) that a copy of

the by-laws regulating iho ooat of crossings over footpaths) bo sent to the Very Rev. Dean McKenna; (3) tliat the surfacemen be paid 7a 6d per day with cottage allowed; (4) that the general rate tor the current year be iu the f, oo the unimproved value. The Clerk was directed to apply for a renewal of the unexpended sums voted for public works last year, and also to apply for grants for roads whore the rates are insufficient for tbeii maintenance. Accounts amounting tu £339 123 5d were passed for payment.
