REGULATING GAMBLING
Reoeived August 2, 9 3 a.m. SYDNEY, August 2. In the Legislative Aosembly, the Attorney General introduced a Bill to regulate gambling and betting. Thejfjpiovisions include a fine of £IOO for any one betting in the streets or soliciting bets from any one under 21 years of age. The measure also limits the number of racing days, and specifies tha 1 ; fell race meetings must be licensed. Besides borse raoing the Bill deals with other sports. The police are given summary powers.

Strong protests wfre made, on the motion for the adjournment of the Assembly, Bgainst the Sunday opening ceremony. MELBOURNE'S HEALTH. Reoeived August 2, 10.25 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 2. The city health officer states that in 1903 there were 227 deaths per 100,000 population in the city area from consumption; in 1904 the number fell to 172, and glast year there Jwere 142. He believed the time woaid soon oome when deaths from consumption would be reduced oy one half. FEDERAL LEGISLATION.

Sunday convictions for drunkenness in the metropolitan area fell from from 601 iuthe first six months of last year to 139 for, the corresponding period this year.
