WAIRARAPA v. MANAWATU. EASY WIN FOR WAIRARAPA. By Telegraph—Press Association. PALMEKSTON N., August 1. Wairarapa played Manawatu at Palmerstou to-day. The weather was fine with only a very slight breeze blowing. The ground was in splendid order aud the match was played in the presence of a considerable number of spectators. Neither team was thoroughly representative, especially in regard to back divisions. Wrigley was one of the absentees from the Wairarapa combination. Shortly after the commencement of the game P O'JLeary set the backs iu motion, and UarviJle scored a soft try. J. O'JLeary converted. Wairarapa ... 5 Manawatu ... 0 *Hj?| For a long time after this and right to the end of the spell iu fact, the game was confined l;o the forwards. Manawatu had all the best of it penuiug the visitors most of the time and once or twice being within the ace of aooring.
In the second spell Wairarapa "shook things up" a bit Their backs got to work though with little dash (except in the case of P. O'Jbeary who uut in vary effectually) and ail attempts «t a score were easily prevented. Ten minutes from the conclusion of the game, however, the Manawatu forwards went all to pieces from the continued strain upon them and in a few minutes the visitors' backs scored three tries. These were all the result of passing rushes initiated by Logan (half-bauk) and P. O'Leary (five-eighth.) Those who scored tries in the second spell for the visitors were .1. O'Leary (twioe), Darville and Prendeville. J. O'Leary converted two tries. Spaokman made a very fine attempt to convert Darviile's try, the ball just grazing the post. The game ended Wairarapa ... 21 Manawatu ... 0 The two O'Learys and Logan were the best of the visiting backs, and Spaokman and Henderson of the forwards. Manawatu forwards were a useful lot. Swainson, a reoent addition from Hawke's Bay, was the best forward on the ground. Whisaer also played quite up to his old form. Mack Royal (five-eighth) was the only baok who did effectual work. Mr J. Manning was referee.
