DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN ACTOR.
MR J. L. TOOLE. Received August 1, 8.20 a.m. LONDON, Jul7 31. The death is announced of J. h. Toole, the well-known actor. (Mr J. L, Toole was born in 1832. He started life as a clerk in a wine merchant's office in London, but early forsook the tall hat and tail coat for the stage, and at onoe added to the gaiety of nations. Not content with playing comedy on the stage, be invaded private life with his practical jokes, and some good stories are told of his tendency in this direction. For over 50' years "J.L." has been an integral part of theatrical life in the Old Country. He was at one time looked upon as the embodiment of stage wit and humour, and he has probably caused more legitimate and good-humoured laughter *han any one who appeared before the British publio during a longer period than is covered by most men's lives.
