OBITUARY.

I fiergt. Vernon. j (Mt. Benger Mail.) I Thu late Sorgt. Vernon, wlio was killI cd in action in France, and to whose i death we roferred to in our previous ' isue, was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs j E. J. Vornon, Roxburgh). Born in August 1880, ho spent the greater part of j his younger days with his parents at the Wliitccombo, ultimately romoviug with I the family to Coal Creek. Shortly after Scrgt, Vernon was attractod to the West Coast where he was engaged in the coal mining industry, but in later years returned to Roxburgh, eventually working hirnsolf into the position of working manager at the Perseverance mine. Deceased who left New Zealand . with the tunnelling corps, was a firstclass riflo shot and was a prominent members of the local Riflo Club, winning the champion belt in 1913-H in adition to many other trophies. Ho took an active interest in school matters and was for some time secretary of the „Coal Creek .School Committee. He was also a past officer of the Loyal Roxburgh Lodge M.U.1.0.0.F., which ho I joined in May, 1905, being olected E.S. and V.G. in June and December of tho same year-and'XG. in June, 1906. He was also a member of Lodge Tcviot. At a meeting of' the former; held recently, tho lodgeroom was draped in black. Several- members referred to tho high I esteem in which ho had always been held by his brethren, and it was resolved to forward to his wife and family a message of condolence. A memorial service in connection with tho death of Sergt. A'ernon was conducted by tho. Rev. Gunn in the Roxburgh, Presbyterian Church on Sunday oven* ing when there wns a full attendance of members of the Masouic brethren.
