HOCKEY

The Waitahuna hockey, ground was (writes a correspondent) the scene of a very lively a nd' distinctly funny match on Wednesday last -when the local hockey girls fought a battle with half a dozen young men, of tho district who styled themselves tho Brave Hearts. The men were clad in feminine attire and caused great merriment amongst jthe onlookers, especially the goal-keeper whose frantic attempts to stop the ball with his rather-the-worse-of-wear skirt wereA -absurdly funny.. Their football training Mood them in good stead and the centreforward was a mighty force in himself in spite of his skirts. The lady full-backs quailed when he bore down on thcirj with sweeping strides, carrying the ball before him with relentless determination. The gh'L played a plucky game and did some very good passing, while many were tho bumps and-bruises, but the Brave Hearts were too strong for them and won the day by four goals to two. Mr Cowan had a lively time of it in his capacity of referee. There is some talk of a return watch on Wednesday next when it is to be hoped that tho girls will recover then- lost laurels.
