THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT

DBLIVEiRED LAST NIGHT. The Financial Statement was presented to iho House last night by the Minister of Finance (the lion. James Allen). We were unable to take advantage of the facility offered for a resume of the Statement, but it is understood the Government will indicate the directions in which Parliament will be asked to legislate during the present session, and the fiovemmrat will specify those measures which it intends to put through before Parliament adjourns. Details will be given of the more important refonns which are intended to bo dealt with. Same very important financial reforms will be proposed, while it will be Uso indicated that the Government intends to proceed with the reform of the Legislative Council, reform ol the Public Service, and land reform as indicated by the speeches of the Leader of the Reform party and his nontenants prior to and since the general election. An increase in "tlie graduated land tax will be proposal but the amount of the inoiviise has not up to the present Iwn indicated, and still remains strictly a Cabinet secret.
