THE EXHIBITION BUILDING WRECKED. A heavy thunderstorm at Christclmrci m Sunday was preceded by a. violen squall. Although this only lasted a fe\ ninutes, it did much damage. Window ivere blown in aud gardens wrecked. Th ihief mishap, however, was the collapse c i large portion of the Exhibition Building kbout 200 ft were blown down, and muc iieavy timber smashed. The disaster i not likely to delay the opening of th Exhibition, but from the point of view c the contractors is a serious one. The tiad been at work since November. Within a couple of minutes the framework that had outlined, the grace ful form of the building had become a masi of broken timber. Happily no one was oi the spot at the time, else loss of life woulu. have been almost certain. Had the gale' struck the buildingjon a working day, when 30 or 40 men are engaged in the construction, the accident would have been one of the most serious in the history of Canter bury.
