TUAPEKA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the above Society was- held in the Churoh of England schoolroom on Wednesday evening, accompanied by a social, to which all interested in tbe affairs of the Society were invited. There was, consequently, a large .attendance of ladies and gentlemen. Mr H. H. Leary (President) presided.

After some time bad been spent in social intercourse, the business part of the proceedings was commenced, tbe Secretary reading the minutes of the previous annual meeting, which were duly confirmed.

The Chairman said that in accordance with the decision come<>to at their last annual meeting they had held three shows during tbe past year, at which no money prizes had been given. At these the receipts bad been augmented by the efforts of the ladies who bad supplied refreshments during the afternoon. The result was that the total' receipts for tbe year (including a balance of 12s lOd) were £35 13s 9d, and tbe total expenditure £26 2s 4d, leaving a credit balance of £9 11s sd. Speaking personally, he did not think tbe result satisfactory and he was strongly of opinion that there was a feeling among those who had actively assisted the So* ciety in the past that owing to the poor support received from the general public they would be jus,t as pleased to see the Society dropped for a year or two. The question they would be asked to decide before going, further was whether they should accord the Society a decent burial, or whether they should resume operations on a firmer basis — viz., with the aid of members' subscriptions and money prizes for exhibits. Several members spoke of the difficulties the Society had to contend against in the past and the poor encouragement they had received from the public in the way of attendance at the shows, etc.

The Rev. J. A. Will moved that the Society be continued on its former basis, speaking strongly in favor of its continuance.

The motion was seconded by Mr F. A. Miller, and after several others (including the Rev. B. H. Ginger) had spoken in support it was put to the meeting and carried unanimously.

The election of officers was then proceeded with when the following were duly elected : —President;, Mr W. Sinolair; vice-President, Mr A. Crooke ; Committee : Mesdames Browne, Grooke, Hilcon, Nicoll, Vivian and Miss Dona. Messrs Anderson, Campbell, Clark, Darfcon, Ginger, Haggitt, Hilto"h, F. A. Miller, Woods and Will.

Before dispersing, Mr J. O. Browne moved a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies who had so kindly provided the refreshments and made all the arrangements for the successful carrying out of the social. He said the idea had Originated with Mrs Crooke and they were all under a special debt of gratitude to her for the enthusiastic manner in which she had worked and got others bo work in connection with the affair. The motion was carried by acclamation.
