TUAPEKA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The Tuapeka Horticultural Society's Spring Show, which will be held in the Town Hall this afternoon and evening may be confidently described as thi best tbat has yei been held under the auspices of the Society. Considering the very high standard of excellence which many of the Society's shows have represented, this may seem to savor somewhat of exaggeration, but those who take the opportunity of visiting tbe Town Ball to-day *ill have no difficulty in realising the fact. To begin with, the entries are very much larger than they have *ver previously been, whildfc tbe quality of the exhibits is exceptionally high — narcissi, of course, predominating, though there will bo a very good representation of all the other flowers of the season. In addition, a very choice collection of narcissi "has been s^nt from Christchurch, for exhibition only, by Mr J. G. Davis, who is one of the most suooassf ul growers of those flowers in the colony. Not less pleasant to the visitors should the anticipation be of seeing Mr H. Hart's famous collection of naroißßi w,ith which Batr and Sons' cup was won at tbe Dnnedin Show last week ; as also the equally splendid flowers of the same kind .% bioh will be shown by Mr J. J. Woods, both of those gentlemen having consented to show two tables of flowers for exhibition only. In accordance with a deoision arrived at some time ago, the Society will give no prizes of any kind at this Show, while, on the other hand, no members' tickets have been issued and consequently the usual revenue from that source will not be forthcoming. Tbe object of this double departure in the methods of the Society is to determine whether the general public will attecd the show in sufficient numbers to provide the necessary revenue for the maintenance of tbe Society. There will be four shows carried out on these lines and it is to be hoped the public, as it certainly has every right to do, will show its appreciation of the many years of educative and elevating work done by the Society, and make such a response as will place the stability of tbe Society beyond all question in the future. A number of ladies have kindly taken on themselves the burden of providing afternoon tea to-day, which should prove both an agreeable innovation and a not inoonsiderable source of profit.
