OUR MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(To THE EdITOE.) . Sin, —Your report in Wednesday's issue shows that a young man got a well-deserved fine inflicted upon him at the last sitting of the above court for his rough treatment of poor John Chinaman ; but was there nothing about the case that might have suggested to the presiding magistrate that probably drink was at the bottom of it? Why didn't Mr Hawkins suggest to Kelly and others such, as the papers say he did to the sly grog-sellers whom he had to fine at Balclutha a short time ago—viz., that by " the use of all those lawful means of effective organisation, of public meeting, of the active and intelligent use of their electoral rights, and of constitutional appeal to Parliament," they might obtain the repeal or modification of an obnoxious law ? No doubt the law which forbids Master Kelly puruhing a Chinaman to his heart's content is very obnoxious to him. —l am, etc., Abstinence.
