HORSESHOE BEND.
(From a Correspondent.)
A prospecting area of about 50 acres has been applied for some distance below Kirkpatrick and Edie's claim, on the west side of the Clutha. Immediately on the ground being obtained, prospecting will be commenced, and should the circumstances warrant it, it is intended to have one of Mr Rigney's current motors constructed to raise water for working purposes. Great things are expected from this invention, and I believe the results will justify the expectations entertained regarding it. This is the opinion of those who are qualified to form an estimate of its capabilities.
Mr B. Stewart, of Island Block, has had his application for an accommodation license granted. This will be a great boou to travellers, as the distance betweeu the two nearest hotels* is ten long miles. I believe there was some slight objection raised by the Teviot constable, on the ground that the house was not wanted, it being in such an out of the way place. If that very active officer had much experience of travelling through the country, he would know thafc it is just in such places that accommodation is most needed.
Ptople up this way are highlf pleased at the success of the Golden Run dredge. This and the Undaunted claim are paying splendidly, and may they long continue so.
