CLUTHA RIVER BOARD.

A meeting of the Olutha River Board was held at Balclutha yesterday, and was attended by Messrs Thomson (chairman), Dallas, NelsoE, Hay, Mitchell, Christie, and T. E. Williams. A letter was received from Mr Jas. Porter, Tuapeka Mouth, asking the Board to protect his land from the encroachment of the Cluthaßiver. — A lengthy discussion ensued, in which all the members took an active part, the general feeling being that the Board was in no wise responsible. — Mr Williams mentioned that he had visited the ground, and found that through the encroachment of the river on Mr Porter's land the course of the main channel was being diverted, which would, in time, render that part of the river less navigable for the Board's steamer. There was a good deal of settlement in that neighbourhood, and it was the Board's duty to see that the river was kept open for traffic. — It was agreed that Messrs Thomson, Smith, and Williams visit Mr Porter's land, and report to the Board at next meeting as to the best course •to be followed. One tendpr was received for the removal and re-erection of the goods shed at Tuapeka Mouth. — The matter was left in the hands of Mi- Williams to deal with. The Board spent some time in committee considering matters relating to the working of the steamer and the tariff recently adopted. Mr Thomson was re-elected chairman for the current year.
