THE FERRETS AND THE RABBITS.
{To the Editor ) Sib,— With regard to the 20,000 ferrets about to be let loose amoogst us, 1, for one, think \t \a only a waste of money. They will coat, I tuppose, fully £10,000. which is so much money thrown away. We will hive to ive up trapping ; for we find that the ferrets a c more likely to get into the traps han the rubhits. As tbe number of ferrets will have to be kept up, it will piy the farmers better to trup them instead of the rabbits, and sell them to the Government again. I am inclined to think it would pay the Government better to give ljd a skin for the rabbits ; for then people would find it to .their advantage to kill them. The Government rabbiters could then be done away with, and there would be no need of inspectors. Private individuals make large sums out of buying •<nd importing rabbits'<ins ; why should not the Government do this, and make tbe Rabbit Department self-supporting P I have trapped cats, ferret*, and rabbits all in the same burrow. Ferrets brought up among rabbits will not hurt them. I trust those who have any influence with the Government will exert it to have this ferret business stopped.— l am, &c, Jambs Fell. Lawrence, Ist February. .
