TUAPEKA COUNTY RACES.

The annual racing carnival of Tuapeka is now at band, and the local "sports" are looking forward with no small amount of interest to the meeting. As a country race gathering Tuapeka, it is not too much to say, stands almost unrivalled, both in respect of *he liberality of its prizes, the number and variety of the events, the quality of its fields, and the honesty of its contests. The p* u b is certainly not an old-established institution ; but for th« short time it has been in existence it has succeeded in making a very fair name for itself in racing circles, and its meetings invariably attract large gatherings of the sporting public. This year's races will be no exception to those of previous years, unless it be in the direction of improvement. The fields are very large, and include some of the best blood of the province, and as the handicaps have been well received, we do not •xpect to hear of a too extensive use of tho ■enriching pencil. Already most of the horses have arrived, and the accommodation of the local stables is pretty well taxed. The local or district horses, of which there are not a few, have been in active training for a considerable time past, some of them doing exceedingly good work in their trial gallops. The coarse is in splendid order, the tarf being well consolidated, and if the weather keeps op there will be no reason to complain on this wore. "Paul Pry" sends us the following notes:— The meeting on Thursday and Friday gives promise of being a big saooess. I understand that nearly all the hones nominated for the principal events will accept ; in fact, folly two-thirds have already arrived in* Lawrence, being quartered at the several livery stables. Of coarse, it is no easy task for a novice to spot the winners, aa very little training has been done on the Ideal course. For the Maiden Plate, I believe a fair field will face the starter ; but as the nominations do not dose till Wednesday night, it is outside my province to hazard a guess aa to the name of the probable winner. The Publicans' Handicap ought to be carried off either by Cheap Jack or Factory Girl, aa I am eiven to understand that neither Captain Cock nor Molly Bawn are likely to put in an appearance. Garibaldi should have a big say in the District Handicap, with Louis Philippe rad Archie dose up. The Three-mile Trot is likely to bring out a big field, but as it is hard to say which of the horses will be " on the job " the task of selecting the winner uno etsy one. Colleen Dhas should not be far away at the finish, Duchess being my fancy for second place. Of coarse, I am assuming that Oliver will dot torn up, otherwise 1 would place him first The Novel Race, I think, is a good thing for Specimen ; the Hurdles will like&be appropriated by Garibaldi, with Danraee seoond ; against the Trial Stakes I will bracket Mon Loup's name first. As to the other events I have no idea what horses see likely to accept, and therefore will not attempt to place any of then/
