INVERCARGIILL NEWS.

[By Telegraph.] (From our own Correspondent.) Invercaroill, January 12th. The crops throughout the Southland districts are looking much better than they are in Otago. Last night's rain did much good, but the yield will be far below that of last year. A man named Ryan was to-day committed for perjury ; he is the individual who was discovered by an indignant husband in bed with his better half. The husband has been committed to take his trial for stabbing Ryan. The Orepuki Coal Mine Company lost the contract for supplying coal to the railway this year, and the shareholders *re for this and other reasons very down- ; hearted concerning their prospects. I believe before the year is over an extedßive gold field will be opened up in a district inland from here. The present prospectors are very sanguine.
