{From our own Correspondent.) Dunedin, January 12fch. The Caledonian Bowling Club beat the Milton Club by six points. At the swimming match in the Clutha River this morning, Phelan beat Jones easily. The Supreme Court case, in which J. C. Bucklaucl is sued for damages for breach of covenant of lease, ia not yet finished. The Mayoral salary for the present year was fixed at last night's meeting of the City Council at £400, the aame as last year. The Rev. Mr Scorgie, of Lumsden, has been called by a substantial majority, to the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church at Tapanui. The bush fires in the New Plymouth district have been subdued, and all danger may now be said to be over. A telegram came into New Plymouth last night stating that fire had broken out at Eltham, and volunteers from New Ply mouth again went out in a special train, but the fire was not serious and was at once put out. Several of the country School Committees have already nominated Messrs M'Kenzie and Clark to fill the vacancies on the Education Board. Both these gentlemen are almost certain of re-election. Who the third member will be it is hard to say. In all likelihood Mr Jas. Green will have a show. A deputation from the new Cromwell Quartz-mining Company waited on Mr Larnach to day regarding the sinking of a deep shaft at Bendigo. They wished to know if the Government would be disposed to assist in any way. Mr Larnach said that the matter would be considered, to see if a vote could be asked for the purpose next session. MrW. J. Steward. M.H.H., who has just returned from a visit to Australia, writes to the "Waimate Times" thai there is not a word of truth in the statement that he recently inherited a large sum of money. A woman named Mary Barnes, who had been living with a Chinese hawker in Dunedin for the past five years, died suddenly on Sunday morning. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that she died from heart disease, accelerated by excessive drinuing. The Dunedin City Council have 160 men of the " unemployed M at work, 18 of them being at stonebreaking.
