It has been discovered that the John Reid whose body was found this week hanging in the bush near Timaru was the missing witness at the recent dummy ism enquiry, of whom the Police could obtain no clue. It has not been decided whether to quarantine the passengers by the Arawa or not. There has been only one case, which broke out on the 31st March. The Premier leaves for Wellington tomorrow morning. (Per Press Association.) Timaru, May 6th, A ma a named John Reid, a brother of Alexander Reid, a farmer, was found hanging to a tree in the Raukapuka Bush to-day. He left his brother's house on February Ist, and had not since been heard of. Hia body was found by some boys. Wellington, May 7th. The following regulation re the sale of poisons came into force on January Ist : " Every seller of poison or of any poisonous admixture shall enclose such poison or admixture in a bottle of octagonal shape, and shall, before delivering the same to the purchaser, firmly affix to such bottle a label with the word ' poison ' in white letters on red ground, appearing thereon."

The Rev. William Webber, Bishop of Brisbane, will be consecrated on June Ilth. The Victorian four million 4 per cent, loan is announced. The minimum is fixed at £99, and tenders will be opened on the 13th inst. The Queensland two and a-half million 4 per cent loan has been placed in the market with a minimum of £97. Tenders will be opened on the 15th inst. Earl Granville has thanked Mr J. B. Thurston, Colonial Secretary for Fiji, for his services in connection with the recent commission of inquiry into the German land claims on that island. A firm of eminent engineers and contractors has offered to provide the necessary capital for the construction of a large ocean dock at Adelaide if the local Committee approves. Lord Augustus Loftus has written an article in the "Pall Mall Gazette," in which he suggests that a Council similar to the Austrian Reichsrath shoald be formed as a basis of federation. Twenty thousand persons of all classes have signed the memorial thanking the Colonies for their generous assistance in the Soudan.
