ROXBURGH.
We have been visited during the past week with heavy rain" a,nd, hail- showers, the ranges being capped with snow. The uaual flood came down the creeks at each end at the town, and, there being no proper phan.nel owing to the late heavy flood whiph filled them, in, it was a difficult jjob to keep the water from flowing on the main street. However, a few hands' were put an, and a small channel Sluiced out, whiph. fcept the. water within bounds. Prominent amongst the Corporation employe's was His Worship the Mayor, who handled a long-handled shovel most skilfully, aud rendered effective service.
The specifications and drawings in connection with the Waikaia bush road contracts have beeu prepared. - There are
four different contracts, which must be J completed by the end of April. The drawings and specifications were executed by Mr M'George, the Engineer for Vincent County, who must have spent considerable time in preparing them. The drawings or plans, which cover eleven sheets of paper, are most artistically executed, and the specifications, being void of the usual superfluous wording, can easily be understood by intending contractors. A man, named John Watson, who said he was a tailor by trade, was carrying on a nice little game in the way of sticking people up for money, on the plea that he was hungry and also that he had obtained work at his trade, but wished to raise i funds in order to provide himself with the necessary "goose," &c. By the latter means he obtained £1 from a party of miners at Roxburgh East, and immediately afterwards he spent all the money in drink. Constable Pool cut his career short ; and on three different ohargesj under the Police Offences Act, 1884, sentences of 14 days each on the first and second charges and one calendar month on the third charge (sentences to be cumulative) were passed upon him at the Police Court on Thursday by Mr Burton, J.P. i =r
