THE HOLIDAYS.
"WAITAHUNA GULLY SCHOOL PICNIC. The above picnic was held in the school paddock at Waitahuna Gully on 31st December. The morning did not look very promising, but it gradually cleared off, and by the time appointed for the commencement of the sports the ground was nice and dry, and the day turned out all that could be wished for. The parents, storekeepers, and others having placed ample funds at the disposal of the School Committee, it enabled them to carry out the arrangements in the way of refreshments and prizes in a very liberal manner. There was a very large attendance of parents and others ou the ground, who all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the fun, caused through the various contests engaged in between (he youngsters, which was kept up till a little after six o'clock, by which time every one had succeeded in gaining a prize. The Committee, assisted by several of the ladie3, were indefatigable in their exertions during the day, in carrying through tho different arrangements to a successful issue, which they undoubtedly succeeded in accomplishing. Arrangements had been made by the Committee for a dance to take place after the picnic in the Athenaeum ; consequently by eight o'clock the hall was crowded and dancing commenced shortly afterwards, to capital music supplied by Miss Hansen (harmonium) and Mr A. Miller (violin). Several songs, duets, &c, were sung at intervals during the evening. A duet was exceedingly well rendered by Mrs and Miss Hansen, accompanied by Mr Miller on the violin. Messrs Bryden, Pennel, and Slythe also gave songs in first-class style. Refreshments were handed around at eleven, and at twelve " Auld Lang Syne " was led off by Mr Bryden, the whole house joining in the chorus. Dancing, continued till one, hat being the hour decided on, which closed the programme for the picnic of 1884, every one being highly satisfied with the manner in which it had been carried out.
